Summary

The 2026 International Joint Initiative for Research Harnessing Disruptive Technologies is a large-scale collaborative call managed by NordForsk for Nordic participation, coordinated by Canada's New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF). It unites research funders from 21 countries and regions to support high-risk, high-reward interdisciplinary research using disruptive technologies — defined as innovations that replace or radically alter systems, processes, or behaviours — to create transformative societal and economic impact aligned with the UN SDGs. Nordic research teams can receive up to 17.1 million NOK per project, with projects lasting three years (plus possible one-year no-cost extension). Teams must include co-PIs from at least three different funding organizations across at least three countries, with at least one Canadian partner and partners from at least two Nordic countries. The research must be genuinely interdisciplinary, spanning at least two of three broad areas: natural sciences/engineering, social sciences/humanities, and health/life sciences. The application follows a three-stage process: Notice of Intent (March 2026), Letter of Intent with distributed peer review (June 2026), and full application (November 2026), with funding decisions in March 2027. Evaluation criteria emphasize consortium strength, novelty, potential impact, and feasibility. Projects must engage stakeholders beyond academia and integrate equity, diversity, and inclusion principles throughout the research design. This call is primarily targeted at academic and research institutions, requiring institutional affiliation and research capacity. It is not designed for NGOs or non-profit organizations working in operational project delivery, though such organizations could potentially serve as non-funded partners or stakeholders in a research consortium.

Historical Context

Published January 8, 2026. This is part of the international NFRF collaboration. The call intends to fund 12 research projects with Nordic participation. Webinars were held in 2025 and 2026 to inform potential applicants.
