Summary

NordForsk is a funding organization under the Nordic Council of Ministers that finances and facilitates Nordic cooperation on research and research infrastructure. It provides grants for collaborative research projects, networks, and infrastructure across the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden) and autonomous areas (Faroe Islands, Greenland, Åland Islands), often extending to Baltic countries. The organization opens approximately six calls per year across rotating themes such as societal security, artificial intelligence, education, health, Arctic research, and disruptive technologies. Current open calls (as of March 2026) include Nordic-Baltic Education Systems, Humanities and Social Sciences Networks, and Disruptive Technologies. Funding amounts vary significantly by call, ranging from NOK 7 million to NOK 120 million per program. Eligibility is restricted to research-performing organizations — universities, research institutes, and similar entities that produce published academic research. Consortia must include partners from at least three Nordic countries. While third-sector organizations and NGOs can participate as project partners in some calls, the project lead must always be a research institution. This makes NordForsk primarily an academic/research funder rather than an NGO grant-maker.

Historical Context

NordForsk is an established organization under the Nordic Council of Ministers that has been running continuous funding calls for many years. The calls archive goes back to at least 2017, with approximately six calls per year. Topics rotate across themes including societal security, AI, education, health, Arctic research, and disruptive technologies. Previous rounds have funded projects in areas such as personalized medicine, paediatric cancer, neutron scattering, migration research, and societal security.
