Summary

The Kingdom of Denmark, through the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science (DAHES), provides annual funding to UArctic (University of the Arctic) for collaborative projects addressing Arctic challenges. In 2025, funding was doubled from 1.5 to 3 million Danish Kroner (approximately €400,000), enabling six projects covering biodiversity, crisis management, education, resource management, health, and water security. Ilisimatusarfik (University of Greenland) now serves as the national UArctic agency for the Kingdom of Denmark. Each project can receive up to 500,000 DKK (approximately €67,000). The main applicant must be a UArctic member university in Greenland, Denmark, or the Faroe Islands, with a minimum of three UArctic partner institutions (at least two from within the Kingdom of Denmark). Projects must demonstrate alignment with UArctic values and address Arctic-relevant research, education, or networking goals. Applicants must provide at least 25% co-funding from in-kind or other sources. The 2026 call had a deadline of February 28, 2026, with projects running from September 2026 through August 2027 (extendable to August 2028). This is a recurring annual program with calls issued each year. Eligible activities include establishing thematic networks, developing joint degree programs, flexible/online education, research networking, and Indigenous-focused education and research initiatives.

Historical Context

Annual recurring program. Funding was doubled in 2025 from 1.5 to 3 million DKK. Ilisimatusarfik (University of Greenland) took over as national UArctic agency for the Kingdom of Denmark starting with the 2025 round. Six projects were funded in 2025 and the same number is planned for 2026. The program also runs parallel streams for Norway and Canada (Indigenous & Northern Collaborative Research).
