Summary
NORA (Nordic Atlantic Cooperation) is a regional development body operating under the Nordic Council of Ministers, headquartered in the Faroe Islands. It funds collaborative projects involving partners from at least two of its four constituent regions: the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, and coastal Norway. External partners from Canada and Scotland are also welcomed. The program is open to anyone — companies, public institutions, and individuals — and supports projects lasting 1-3 years across sectors including marine resources, energy, tourism, digital innovation, and community development. NORA provides up to 500,000 Danish kroner (approximately EUR 67,000) per year per project, with a maximum of DKK 1.5 million for three-year projects. Projects must align with NORA's Strategic Programme 2025-2028 priority areas. NORA explicitly does not fund research projects or cultural initiatives, directing those applicants to Nordforsk and the Nordic Culture Fund respectively. The next application deadline is October 4, 2026. In addition to its main grant rounds, NORA offers smaller "chairmanship grants" of up to DKK 60,000 per project (DKK 240,000 annual ceiling) for partnership building, pre-application support, and dissemination of completed project results. These have no fixed deadline and are available on a rolling basis through the secretariat.
Historical Context
NORA has funded over 330 projects across the North Atlantic region. The current strategic programme covers 2025-2028. The organization operates under the Nordic Council of Ministers.
