Summary
NORA (Nordic Atlantic Cooperation) is an intergovernmental organisation under the Nordic Council of Ministers that has been working since 1996 to strengthen cooperation between private sector and other stakeholders in the North Atlantic region. NORA provides project funding for collaboration projects that include partners from at least two of its four constituent areas: the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, and coastal Norway. The program's overarching goal is to contribute to a strong and dynamic North Atlantic region defined by sustainable economies. Projects can receive up to 500,000 Danish kroner per year, with a maximum of 1.5 million kroner for a three-year project, covering up to 50% of the total project budget. Anyone can apply — companies, public institutions, and individuals. Applications must address one or more of NORA's priority areas for 2025-2028: resource security, artificial intelligence, regenerative tourism, nice places to live, mobility and green transition, marine industries and food production, and silver economy. Projects must also relate to one or more UN Sustainable Development Goals. NORA has two annual application rounds, with deadlines typically in early March and early October. The next deadline is midnight Greenlandic time on 4th October 2026. Research-only or purely cultural projects are not funded. NORA also encourages participation of partners from western neighbours, particularly Canada and Scotland, though non-NORA partners may not receive NORA funds directly.
Historical Context
NORA has been operating since 1996. The current Strategic Programme covers 2025-2028. Two application rounds are held annually (March and October). The program is ongoing with regular funding cycles.
