Summary

The Global Seaweed Coalition (formerly Safe Seaweed Coalition) is a global partnership established by Lloyd's Register Foundation in collaboration with the UN Global Compact and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). It focuses on ensuring the safety and sustainability of the rapidly expanding seaweed sector, which is currently valued at $9 billion annually and could grow 15-fold by 2050. The coalition funds projects through bi-annual calls for proposals evaluated by Scientific and Strategic Advisory Councils. Funded projects span the entire seaweed value chain globally — from small-scale farming in Tanzania and Madagascar to kelp biomass research in Chile and seaweed-based packaging innovation in England. Past supported projects include taxonomic frameworks, typhoon-resistant cultivation platforms, solar dryer technology for small-scale farmers, heavy metal testing, biodiversity impact measurement, and bio-safety frameworks (including one in the Baltic region via SUBMARINER Network). Eligible activities include foresight workshops, working groups, training events, staff exchange programs, technology platforms, pilot demonstrations, prototypes, capacity building, and educational programs. Membership in the coalition is free for the first three years and open to individuals and organizations who are seaweed stakeholders. The coalition seeks collaboration and co-funding partnerships with aligned organizations. The most recent call for proposals (2023-2024) had a submission deadline of January 20, 2024, and new calls are expected to continue on a bi-annual basis given the coalition's secured two-year operational funding.

Historical Context

The coalition has run multiple calls for proposals: 2021, Spring 2022, and 2023-2024. It was originally established as the Safe Seaweed Coalition and rebranded to Global Seaweed Coalition. Founded by Lloyd's Register Foundation with the UN Global Compact and CNRS. Has secured two years of operational funding to continue operations. Previously funded approximately 20+ projects across Asia-Pacific, Africa, Americas, and Europe.
