Summary

The Global Seaweed Coalition (formerly Safe Seaweed Coalition) is a global partnership established by Lloyd's Register Foundation in partnership with the UN Global Compact and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). Its mission is to establish a seaweed industry that provides safe products, safe working conditions, and environmental protection, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals in food security, poverty reduction, marine conservation, and climate action. The Coalition runs periodic Calls for Proposals (historically in 2021, 2022, and 2023-2024) through which it funds projects such as foresight workshops, task forces, working groups, training events, staff exchanges, technology platforms, pilot demonstrations, prototypes, capacity building, and educational programmes. Funded activities are generally expected to leverage larger projects under international, national, or joint initiative funding programmes. Applicants are encouraged to seek co-funding partnerships. The most recent call had a deadline of January 20, 2024. Membership is open to any natural or legal person who is a seaweed stakeholder, and membership is free for the first three years. Members can participate in governance, working groups, and submit proposals. The Coalition secured two years of operational funding as of October 2025 and was hiring a fundraising manager in December 2025, suggesting continued activity. Research outputs are made publicly available to support evidence-based policymaking across the seaweed sector.

Historical Context

The Coalition was established by Lloyd's Register Foundation with the UN Global Compact and CNRS. It has run Calls for Proposals in 2021, Spring 2022, and 2023-2024. Members endorsed the Seaweed Manifesto in 2020. As of October 2025, the Coalition secured two years of operational funding. A fundraising manager position was posted in December 2025, indicating ongoing organizational development.
