Summary
The Global Seaweed Coalition (GSC) is a multi-stakeholder partnership established to support the safety and sustainability of the global seaweed industry. It unites stakeholders across the entire value chain — from smallholder farmers to multinational enterprises, research institutions, and intergovernmental bodies. Founding partners include UN Global Compact, CNRS, and Lloyds Register Foundation. In October 2025, the GSC announced it had secured two years of operational funding, and the UN Global Seaweed Initiative was officially launched. The GSC issues bi-annual calls for proposals on topics identified by its Scientific and Strategic Advisory Councils. Funded projects span a wide range of areas including taxonomic research, biosecurity, cultivation technology, environmental monitoring, community development, safety standards, processing innovation, nutritional research, and biodiversity studies. Projects are expected to leverage larger funding programmes at international or national level. Past supported projects have operated globally — in Australia, Chile, Philippines, Tanzania, Thailand, France, Namibia, and elsewhere. The coalition pursues advancement of UN Sustainable Development Goals through enhanced public health, food security, poverty alleviation, marine ecosystem renewal, and climate change mitigation. While the GSC is not a traditional grant-making body with large open calls, its competitive proposal process provides seed funding and coordination support for seaweed-related research and development projects worldwide.
Historical Context
The GSC secured two years of operational funding in October 2025. The UN Global Seaweed Initiative was officially launched in September 2025 in New York. The coalition ran a Call for Proposals 2023-2024 and has funded multiple rounds of projects globally. Previous grant recipients were recognized in 2024.
