Summary
The Global Seaweed Coalition (also known as the Safe Seaweed Coalition) is a global partnership established by Lloyd's Register Foundation in partnership with the UN Global Compact and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). It brings together diverse stakeholders — from smallholder farmers to multinational businesses, research institutes to intergovernmental organisations — to foster a safe and sustainable seaweed industry as it scales globally. The Coalition funds projects through bi-annual calls for proposals, evaluated by Scientific and Strategic Advisory Councils. Funded projects span research and development, commercial scale development, safety and quality assurance, community empowerment, and regional framework development. Examples include biodiversity monitoring with eDNA, seaweed-based packaging pilots, women-led farming initiatives in Tanzania, and Baltic Sea biosafety guidelines by the SUBMARINER Network. The organization focuses on three interconnected safety dimensions: consumer safety (product standards), environmental safety (ecosystem restoration), and operational safety (worker welfare). Their research indicates the European seaweed market could reach €9 billion within a decade while generating up to 115,000 jobs. The Coalition has secured two years of operational funding and continues to support projects globally, with particular activity in Europe, East Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Americas.
Historical Context
The Coalition was established by Lloyd's Register Foundation in partnership with the UN Global Compact. It endorses the 2020 Seaweed Manifesto. Calls for proposals have been running from at least 2021 through 2024. The most recent annual meeting was held in Paris in October 2023. The Coalition has secured two years of continued operational funding.
