Summary

The Kavli Scholars program is a grant initiative by The Kavli Foundation that provides temporary bridge funding to researchers who have experienced unexpected disruptions limiting or eliminating their ability to conduct research. These disruptions may include sudden funding loss, institutional transitions, or displacement. The program particularly supports postdoctoral researchers, junior faculty, and early-career scientists. Grants provide up to $100,000 per year for periods ranging from six months to two years. Funds are issued directly to the host institution, with up to 15% allowable for indirect costs. The program exclusively supports basic research in four fields: astrophysics, nanoscience, neuroscience, and theoretical physics. Applicants cannot self-nominate — they must be nominated by Kavli-affiliated individuals such as Kavli Institute members or directors, Kavli Prize Laureates, Kavli Professors, or current Kavli-supported investigators. Applications are reviewed twice annually (June 15 and December 15 deadlines), with decisions rendered within 3-4 weeks. Recent scholars have been placed at institutions including Oxford, UC Berkeley, Columbia, and Yale.

Historical Context

The program has been running for multiple years with scholars funded in 2024-2026 and 2025-2027 cohorts. Reviews occur twice annually (June and December). Recent scholars have been placed at Oxford, UC Berkeley, Columbia, Florida International University, and Yale.
