Application Checklist

Eligibility

• Applicant must be a principal investigator affiliated with a Swedish university or equivalent institution
• Application must be prioritized and endorsed by the vice-chancellor of the applicant's institution (nomination-based)
• Funding is for non-profit organizations only (Swedish universities)

Project Scope

• Research must qualify as basic research with high scientific potential

Constraints

• Results must be published with open access through searchable databases
• Grants cannot be used for travel, conferences, buildings, or publishing costs directly

Historical Context

Program established in 2009. In 2024, 118 Wallenberg Scholars were appointed across 13 Swedish universities. The Foundation has been operating since 1917 and has distributed nearly 42 billion SEK in total grants.
