Historical Context
The partnership between The Pew Charitable Trusts and Dona Bertarelli has been active since 2011 and was later formalized as Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy. Since 2017, the partnership has contributed to the designation or expansion of numerous MPAs including Ecuador's Hermandad Marine Reserve, Mexico's Revillagigedo Archipelago National Park, French Southern Territories reserves, New Caledonia's Natural Park of the Coral Sea, Rapa Nui MPA in Chile, Australia's Christmas Island and Cocos Islands Marine Parks, and several UK overseas territory MPAs. They have helped establish MPAs covering over 16 million square kilometers across more than 20 sites, with nearly 12 million square kilometers highly or fully protected — representing more than 90% of all such designations worldwide. They also completed the largest debt conversion for ocean conservation to date for the Galápagos Islands.
