Summary

The DOEN Foundation (Stichting DOEN) is a Dutch grant-making organization funded by the Postcode Loterij and VriendenLoterij lotteries. It supports innovative initiatives from pioneers and gives them a "flying start" to demonstrate that systemic change is possible. The foundation works to accelerate the transition toward a circular economy where community comes first. DOEN operates across three thematic pillars: Regenerative Economy (green/environmental), Solidarity-based Society (social inclusion), and Transformative Power of Imagination (arts/culture). Under its Green pillar, DOEN funds sustainable energy projects in the Netherlands, Africa, and Asia, social entrepreneurs with innovative solutions, and fair and sustainable food systems. Portfolio examples include oyster farming for ecosystem restoration, food waste reduction, and waste management initiatives. The foundation uses a hybrid funding approach — "grants where necessary, loans where possible" — and typically funds no more than one-third of a project's total budget. There are no fixed minimum or maximum grant amounts. Applications are accepted year-round through an online portal with a quickscan pre-assessment tool, but must be submitted at least four months before the project start date. Applications can be submitted in Dutch or English, and the foundation is open to legally registered organizations globally.

Historical Context

DOEN Foundation is funded by three Dutch charity lotteries (Postcode Loterij, VriendenLoterij). It has been operating as a long-standing grant-making foundation. The TerraViva Grants page was last updated November 2020, but DOEN's own website shows active and ongoing operations with current application processes.
