Summary

The MedFund is an environmental conservation trust fund based in Monaco, established in 2015 by Monaco, France, and Tunisia in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the MedPAN network. Its core mission is to provide sustainable, long-term financing for marine protected areas (MPAs) across the Mediterranean Basin. The fund operates as a private non-profit organization that raises and invests financial resources from public and private partners, using the interest yield to award grants to eligible MPA management structures. As of 2025, the MedFund has committed more than EUR 7 million in support of 22 MPAs across 8 Mediterranean countries. Eligible activities covered by MedFund grants include: human resource costs (excluding government salaries), maintenance of equipment and infrastructure, purchase of small equipment, surveillance and enforcement, active governance and stakeholder engagement including co-management activities, public awareness and communication, scientific monitoring of conservation targets, management activities aimed at improving conservation outcomes, support for socio-economic activities, climate change adaptation and mitigation measures, promotion of gender equality, and long-term financial sustainability planning for MPAs. Geographic scope is focused on the Mediterranean. Priority intervention countries for the 2025 call are Albania, Algeria, Croatia, Greece, Lebanon, Morocco, Montenegro, Tunisia, and Turkiye. The fund supports Mediterranean nations and international environmental organizations committed to safeguarding the Mediterranean sea and coastal ecosystems. Eligible applicants are officially established MPAs or those at an advanced stage of establishment, with an up-to-date management plan and a dedicated management unit. Both MPA management authorities and NGOs may apply; however, NGO applications must be accompanied by a letter of approval or support from the relevant national authorities. Applications from NGOs without this letter are considered incomplete and will not be reviewed. The grant call is organized in two phases: Phase 1 requires submission of an Expression of Interest form; Phase 2 requires a complete Application Form, an Activity Description File, and a Funding Request submitted via email. The fund operates on an annual grant cycle; the 2025 call had Phase 1 deadline of 15 May 2025 and Phase 2 deadline of 13 July 2025.
