Summary

SOS Corail is a participatory crowdfunding and patronage platform co-managed by the Fondation de la Mer and Ifrecor (Initiative Française pour les Récifs Coralliens), established through a tripartite convention signed in August 2019. The platform channels donations from citizens and corporate sponsors to scientifically validated conservation projects targeting coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds. All projects are pre-selected by Ifrecor and then validated by an independent scientific and technical committee before being listed for public fundraising. Projects are exclusively located in French overseas territories, spanning three ocean regions: the Caribbean (Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana), the Indian Ocean (Réunion, Mayotte, Îles Éparses), and the Pacific (New Caledonia, French Polynesia). Project funding goals range from roughly €4,000 to over €200,000, with each campaign running until its target is met or the deadline passes. If a campaign falls short, collected donations are redistributed to other priority projects on the platform. Organizations wishing to list a project must contact the SOS Corail team directly and submit full scientific, technical, and financial documentation for committee review. The Fondation de la Mer then formalizes funding via a convention with each selected project holder. Donors receive French tax deductions (66% for individuals, 60% for companies), which incentivizes corporate and philanthropic giving. The platform addresses a recognized global emergency: 50% of coral reefs have already disappeared worldwide, and France — as custodian of 10% of the world's reef surface area through its overseas territories — has a special responsibility. SOS Corail aims to mobilize broad societal engagement to fund scientific monitoring, reef restoration, mangrove regeneration, and public education around these ecosystems.

Historical Context

SOS Corail was launched under a tripartite convention signed on 5 August 2019 between the Ministry of Overseas Territories, the Ministry of Ecological Transition, and the Fondation de la Mer. Multiple campaign rounds have been completed successfully, including fully funded campaigns for mangrove restoration in Martinique (€142,400), reef restoration in Martinique (€25,000), MERCI-Cor impact mitigation in Réunion (€60,000), and mangrove restoration in Mayotte (€108,389).
