Summary
The Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) is Germany's federal development agency, implementing international development and cooperation projects on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and other German and international donors. GIZ's circular economy and waste management expertise unit supports partners worldwide in transitioning to more sustainable resource use by reducing waste generation, improving waste collection, and enabling circular economic models. GIZ's circular economy work covers multiple material streams including plastics and packaging, organic waste, e-waste, batteries, textiles, and construction materials. Key programme areas include supporting government agencies and municipalities in developing circular economy strategies, helping companies adopt environmentally sound product design, deploying digital solutions for material tracking, and scaling informal waste sector formalisation. GIZ coordinates the PREVENT Waste Alliance, an international multi-stakeholder partnership that brings together companies, civil society organisations, research institutions, and governments to develop circular economy solutions adaptable to different country contexts. In India, GIZ has implemented programmes on plastic waste management, organic waste management in cities, and e-waste formalisation, often working with NGO partners for community-level implementation. In sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, GIZ runs country programmes on municipal solid waste and plastic leakage reduction in close collaboration with national governments. GIZ also co-anchored the Go Circular: Climate and Clean Oceans initiative, which specifically targets plastic pollution in ocean-adjacent countries. GIZ does not operate competitive grant calls open to external organisations. Engagement is structured as commissioned project implementation via procurement tenders, public-private partnership facilitation (develoPPP), multi-stakeholder alliance membership, or country-level partnership agreements with NGOs. Organisations interested in collaboration should approach relevant GIZ country offices or technical units directly, or apply for PREVENT Waste Alliance membership, which provides a structured entry point into GIZ-facilitated circular economy networks in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Historical Context
GIZ has operated waste and circular economy programmes since the 1990s. The India plastic waste programme ran 2020-2024. The Go Circular initiative was launched around 2022. PREVENT Waste Alliance was established in 2020. GIZ programmes in Africa on plastic waste management have been active in Ghana, Kenya, and Tanzania.
