Promotes a healthy marine environment capable of withstanding climate change. Supports projects addressing: restoration of marine and coastal ecosystems (eelgrass, stone reefs, mussel beds) with climate focus; combating marine pollution from wastewater, nutrient runoff, plastic waste, and shipping impacts; research into future climate solutions and their impacts on maritime ecosystems. Covers both Danish sea areas and international marine conservation.
Funding Amount
Grants range from DKK 500,000 up to millions; larger grants for significant projects (e.g. DKK 9.6 million for Køge Bay Marine Park)
How to Apply
Currently not accepting new project ideas. When open, project ideas are submitted via the foundation website. Applicants are encouraged to monitor veluxfoundations.dk for future application windows. Contact: abi@veluxfonden.dk (Adam Billing) or ale@veluxfonden.dk (Ane-Marie Løvendahl Eskildsen).

Summary

VELUX FOUNDATION's Environment and Sustainability Programme focuses on achieving a healthy, climate-resilient marine environment in Danish sea areas and beyond. Running from 2023 to 2030, the programme channels substantial funding into three pillars: marine and coastal ecosystem restoration (especially seagrass meadows, stone reefs, and mussel beds as carbon storage habitats); combating marine pollution from wastewater, nutrient runoff, marine debris including plastic, and offshore activities; and advancing understanding of future climate solutions and their impacts on ocean ecosystems. The foundation supports research-based, knowledge-driven projects and has established the National Centre for Marine Nature Restoration to translate scientific findings into practical restoration guidance. Grants range from several hundred thousand DKK to multi-million DKK amounts for major projects. Commercial activities, aquaculture, and fishing projects are explicitly excluded. As of March 2026, the programme is not accepting new project ideas, but applicants are encouraged to monitor the website for future windows. This is one of Denmark's most significant marine environment funding programmes and is highly relevant for the marine-conservation theme — especially for organisations working on seaweed/mussel ecosystem restoration, coastal protection, or marine pollution in Danish and Baltic waters.

Historical Context

Programme runs 2023-2030. VELUX FOUNDATION co-established the National Center for Marine Nature Restoration with the Danish Ministry of Environment (DKK 20 million renewed 2026-2030). In 2021, the foundation awarded DKK 320 million to climate initiatives. Has supported projects including Healthy Vejle Fiord 2.0 (DKK 4.0m, 2025), Blue Gold (DKK 525,000, 2024), and Køge Bay Marine Park (DKK 9.6m, 2022).

Why it was added

Danish foundation with broad environmental sustainability funding that includes marine pollution and climate solutions relevant to Baltic Sea conservation
