Application Checklist

Eligibility

• Applicant must be an officially designated Basel Convention Regional/Coordinating Centre or Stockholm Convention Regional/Subregional Centre — proposals from NGOs, governments, or other entities are explicitly excluded
• Projects must be implemented in ODA-eligible countries listed on the OECD DAC cooperation list

Project Scope

• Project must address at least one of four result areas: (1) controlling transboundary movements of plastic waste, (2) environmentally sound management of plastic waste, (3) preventing/minimizing plastic waste generation, or (4) reducing hazardous constituent risks in plastic waste
• Projects must build on existing tools and results from BRS Secretariat activities (e.g., Plastic Waste Inventory Toolkit, ESM guidance)
• Projects may be implemented at municipal, national, or regional level in one or more eligible countries

Constraints

• Engage relevant Basel Convention focal points or Stockholm Convention national focal points in project implementation
• No current open call — monitor BRS Secretariat announcements for future SGP rounds
• Budget between approximately USD 65,000 and USD 180,000 per project

Historical Context

Three rounds of calls for proposals have taken place: mid-2020, late 2020, and mid-2022. A total of 83 eligible proposals were received; 23 projects were selected for funding. The programme builds on the earlier BRS-Norad-1 project. Funding provided by Norad, Germany, and Norway. A project list updated in 2025 is available from the Secretariat, suggesting ongoing implementation of selected projects.
