Organization must be able to demonstrate relevant expertise in waste management, circular economy, or plastic waste reduction in India

Project Scope

Activities must align with GIZ's priority areas: policy advice, capacity building, pilot implementation, or digital solutions for waste management
Projects should operate in GIZ focus states (Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala) or along key river systems (Ganga, Brahmaputra)

Required Documents

GIZ engages partners through formal procurement — organizations must be registered and meet GIZ procurement requirements

Constraints

Partnership proposals must align with Indian government frameworks including Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines and single-use plastics ban
Collaboration must contribute to relevant UN SDGs (SDG 11, 12, 14) and align with Indo-German bilateral cooperation priorities

Historical Context

GIZ has been active in India for over 60 years and currently manages 70 commissions across the country. The waste management portfolio expanded significantly after 2020, with multiple projects launched in alignment with India's 2019 national plastic waste management policy and the 2022 EPR guidelines. In 2022, India and Germany established the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership. The global waste management program (2016-2022) has concluded, while the Circular Economy Solutions project runs through September 2026 and the marine ecosystem protection project through March 2025.
