Eligibility

• This is NOT a grant program — NABU runs this as its own initiative; no external funding applications are accepted
• Participation as a volunteer cleanup organizer is open to anyone via ICCD@NABU.de or Gewässerretter.de
• Fishing for Litter participation is limited to commercial fishers in German North Sea and Baltic Sea ports

Required Documents

• Cleanup findings should be documented and reported via the Gewässerretter.de platform

Constraints

• Geographic focus is exclusively on German coastlines (North Sea and Baltic Sea)
• Annual Coastal Cleanup Day takes place around September 16-19 each year

Historical Context

Program launched in 2010. Fishing for Litter began in 2011 at Burgstaaken on Fehmarn. Schleswig-Holstein co-financing since 2015, Lower Saxony since July 2017. By 2020, 62 tons of debris removed from seafloor across 18 ports with 170 participating fishers. 2023 was a record year for Coastal Cleanup Day with 1,570 participants and 99 cleanup actions.
