Summary
MINEV (Waste Minimization in Large Events) is an approved Interreg Europe project running from March 2023 to May 2027 with a total budget of €1,300,686. The project brings together 5 local and regional administrations from across Europe, supported by one advisory partner (ACR+), to exchange good practices and policy measures that enable waste minimization at large events such as music festivals, sports events, and seasonal markets. The project focuses on three interconnected policy areas: circular economy, waste management, and climate neutrality as they apply to the organization of large public events. MINEV facilitates peer learning between partner cities — including Bologna (Italy), Klaipėda (Lithuania), and regions in Belgium, Greece, and Spain — enabling them to improve local regulations and event-management frameworks based on tested European good practices. MINEV is not an open funding call for external organizations. It is an existing partnership project already approved and underway. It produces outputs such as the MINEV Good Practice Magazine (23 success stories) and has already catalysed policy changes, including updates to Bologna's summer events program and Klaipėda's waste management regulations. Knowledge dissemination happens through workshops, study visits, newsletters, and an online community. Organizations interested in similar interregional cooperation funding should monitor Interreg Europe's open calls for projects and pilot actions, which periodically accept new partnerships. This specific MINEV project is closed to new partners.
Historical Context
MINEV started on 1 March 2023 and runs until 31 May 2027. It is categorized under the 2021–2027 Interreg Europe programme. As of early 2026, the project has produced a Good Practice Magazine with 23 success stories, facilitated policy updates in Bologna and Klaipėda, and participated in events including a BEHAVE workshop in Bodø, Norway. A previous generation of Interreg Europe projects (2014–2020) also addressed related topics, but MINEV is noted as the only project entirely dedicated to policy improvements specifically for waste minimization at large events.
