Application Checklist

Eligibility

• Must be a private sector company — plastic user, converter, or value-chain actor (not NGOs or non-profits)
• Must operate in Latin America and the Caribbean, with primary focus on Brazil
• IFC investment criteria apply: must be a creditworthy private sector entity with potential for measurable development impact

Project Scope

• Scope is limited to industrial plastics and circular economy reduction pathways — not ocean/marine plastic cleanup or community waste collection
• Participation involves quantifying virgin and fossil-based plastic footprints and committing to modeled reduction pathways

Constraints

• No open application process — engagement is initiated by IFC through upstream market identification, not open calls
• Companies selected for piloting must implement roadmaps developed under the initiative

Historical Context

IFC has committed over $1.9 billion and mobilized nearly $500 million to circular economy projects across emerging markets. In May 2025, IFC launched the Harmonized Circular Economy Finance Guidelines at the World Circular Economy Forum in Brazil. Brazil increased reuse of plastic waste by 8% year-over-year in 2024, with recycled content expected to keep rising.
