Historical Context
Pew published the landmark "Breaking the Plastic Wave" report in July 2020 (in partnership with SYSTEMIQ), which demonstrated that an 80% reduction in ocean plastic flows is achievable by 2040. The report was updated in December 2025. The Pew-Gerstner Fund Ocean Plastics Fellowships previously existed but the program page now returns a 404 error, suggesting possible discontinuation or restructuring. Pew has been working on ocean plastics policy in the EU (microplastics from tires, textiles, pellets) and the U.S.
