Historical Context
The Pew-Gerstner Fellowships were announced in May 2025 as a new initiative. They build on the Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation, which has been running for over 30 years and has supported more than 200 scientists from 44 countries. Related past fellows include 2018 fellow Martin Thiel (Pacific plastic litter) and 2024 fellow James Kar-Hei Fang (microplastics in shellfish). Pew's "Preventing Ocean Plastics" project was launched in 2018 separately.
