Summary

The Green Research 2026 instrument is administered by the Danish Independent Research Fund (DFF / Danmarks Frie Forskningsfond) as part of the politically determined Agreements on Research and Innovation 2026-2029. DKK 150 million is allocated annually across 2026-2029 to support independent, curiosity-driven green research. Thematic scope requires all projects to fall under 'green research' - broadly defined as research that can contribute to the green transition. The Danish Independent Research Fund accepts a wide interpretation, from natural sciences to social sciences, as long as the green contribution is clearly articulated. Projects must demonstrate expected or potential societal impact. A critical eligibility requirement is interdisciplinarity: applicants and their Co-PI must represent two different ERC main scientific areas - Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering, or Social Sciences and Humanities. If a research area isn't directly listed in ERC definitions, the review committee will assess it case by case. Career development is a key criterion: all applications must include at least one PhD student or postdoctoral candidate. Additional career development activities are valued, especially if the applicant or Co-PI is an early-career researcher at assistant professor level. Geographically, the programme is restricted to researchers employed at Danish research institutions. International research collaboration can be part of projects, and DFF may allocate a portion of the annual budget specifically for international collaboration initiatives. The application deadline for the June 2026 round is June 2, 2026. Project budgets range from DKK 2.8 to 11.9 million over 2-5 year periods. Applications must be submitted through the e-grant.dk system.

Historical Context

Part of a recurring thematic research programme under Agreements on Research and Innovation 2026-2029, with DKK 150 million allocated annually for green research. Annual budget may be reduced if DFF allocates part to international research collaboration.
