Summary

The UN Ocean Decade Call for Decade Actions No. 09/2025 invites organisations to apply for endorsement of their ocean science and solutions initiatives under the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). This is an endorsement and recognition mechanism, not a direct funding grant. Proponents must secure their own funding and resources. The Ocean Decade vision is 'the science we need for the ocean we want'. The call solicits four types of actions: Decade Programmes (multi-partner, multi-year transformative initiatives), Decade Projects (contributing to one or more Programmes), Ocean Decade Contributions (standalone actions), and Decade Activities (one-off events, workshops, training). Thematic scope is broad, spanning all 10 Ocean Decade Challenges: clean oceans, healthy ocean ecosystems, sustainable ocean harvesting, climate-responsive ocean, a safe ocean, resilient coasts, predictable ocean, transparent ocean, accessible ocean, and inspiring ocean. Pollution, marine litter, and biodiversity loss are explicitly relevant challenge areas. The geographic scope is global. All parts of the world are eligible. Initiatives linking to the Southern Ocean, the Antarctic, and the upcoming Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025-2034) are especially encouraged. Eligible applicants include scientific institutions, research consortia, NGOs, intergovernmental bodies, private sector entities, and community organisations. There is no nationality restriction. UN entities use a separate registration pathway. Deadlines for Call 09/2025 have passed (June-August 2025). The next call (10/2026) is expected in mid-2026. Decade Activities can be registered year-round via a separate rolling link.

Historical Context

This is Call for Decade Actions No. 09/2025, the ninth call in the series running from 2021-2030. Calls are issued periodically; a tenth call (10/2026) is expected in mid-2026. Decade Activities (standalone events) can be submitted on a rolling basis year-round.
