Summary

GCF Accreditation is the process through which organisations become GCF Accredited Entities (AEs), enabling them to access and manage GCF climate finance directly without going through a third-party accredited entity. Under the Revised Accreditation Framework (RAF) adopted in 2025, accreditation operates in two cycles per year, each with a 2-month application window and a 9-month review period. Eligible applicants include public sector agencies, national development banks, NGOs, private sector companies, and international organisations, from any country. Once accredited, entities can submit concept notes and funding proposals for GCF projects and programmes in developing countries, access the Project Preparation Facility (PPF), and employ the Project-Specific Assessment Approach (PSAA). Under the RAF, accreditation has been refocused as a fit-for-purpose institutional due diligence process. Screening requirements cover a defined subset of GCF fiduciary standards and ESS. Accreditation is granted for an indefinite period — the previous 5-year re-accreditation cycle is abolished. Project-specific fiduciary capacity assessment now happens during the project appraisal phase. A fast-track accreditation process is available for entities already accredited by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) or Adaptation Fund, or pillar-assessed by EU DG INTPA. This significantly shortens the review timeline. The 2026 accreditation windows are: 1st window closed 6 April 2026; 2nd window opens 15 July 2026 with a 27 May 2026 pre-screening cut-off. Application fees are waived for SIDS and LDC applicants. Accreditation is a strategic long-term investment that enables autonomous access to GCF's full funding toolkit — an important enabler for NGOs seeking to become independent climate finance implementers.

Historical Context

The Revised Accreditation Framework (RAF) was adopted at GCF Board meeting B.42/13. The RAF replaced the previous fixed 5-year accreditation term with indefinite accreditation. Two 2026 accreditation windows are now active. The 1st 2026 window closed 6 April 2026; the 2nd window opens 15 July 2026.
