Summary

PREVENT Waste Alliance is a GIZ-initiated network of over 600 committed circular economy actors from the Global North and Global South. Membership is completely free and open to organisations working on circular economy themes. The alliance runs five thematic working groups (Plastics, E-waste, Organic Waste, Digitalization, and Financing) and hosts a member platform called PREVENT Hub for networking and matchmaking. For your organisation, the immediate value is access to potential implementation partners in your target geographies. Many of the 600+ members are local NGOs, SMEs, and public bodies in Africa, Southeast Asia, and South Asia who could strengthen your consortium applications for Norad, LIFE, or SWITCH-2-CE calls. The Plastics working group directly addresses EPR, plastic packaging value chains, and collection systems — the exact space you occupy. The Financing working group is a second critical entry point. PREVENT offers a financing helpdesk to support member initiatives, and working group meetings regularly surface new funding opportunities. Members are often the first to hear about sub-grant calls, corporate funding windows, and bilateral programmes that are not widely advertised. PREVENT is also a recognised European Circular Economy stakeholder, meaning membership gives visibility within EU institutional circles — useful for Horizon Europe and LIFE programme applications where stakeholder endorsement and multi-actor networks matter. The engagement model is entirely additive: joining costs nothing and creates no obligations beyond active participation. The main risk is spreading your team too thin across multiple networks. Given the free entry point and direct thematic relevance, this should be your organisation's first action from this entire source list. The PREVENT Hub matchmaking sessions run weekly, and you can begin presenting your organisation to potential partners within days of membership approval. Prior PREVENT members have used the network to form consortia for EU Horizon and LIFE calls, and for connecting with corporate sustainability funders.

Historical Context

PREVENT was founded in 2018 by GIZ and has grown steadily. The original focus was waste management in developing countries and is now embedded in the EU circular economy stakeholder platform. Membership has grown from roughly 200 organisations (2020) to 600+ (2026). No evidence of shrinking programme or loss of corporate support. The network is stable and well-connected to both EU institutions and development finance actors.
