Summary
NEFCO Nopef is a small but useful instrument for Danish companies scouting new developing country markets for green technology deployment. For the organisation, the pathway is indirect: either establish a Danish commercial entity (social enterprise) that applies for Nopef, or partner with a Danish SME working on plastic recycling technology that uses Nopef to fund a feasibility study in one of the organisation's operating countries. The EUR 50,000 maximum makes this a tool for market entry studies rather than operational grants, but it can generate the evidence base needed to unlock larger investment from IFU, NEFCO's own loan facility, or other impact investors. NEFCO also offers larger loans for green investments by Nordic companies internationally — this could be relevant if the organisation's Danish commercial operations need scaling finance.
Historical Context
NEFCO was founded in 1990 and has traditionally focused on environmental projects in Eastern Europe and Russia. Under its 2026-2030 strategy, it has pivoted to become the Nordic Green Bank with a broader mandate covering developing countries globally. The Nopef instrument has existed since the 1970s and is one of the longest-running Nordic feasibility grant mechanisms.
