Summary
The Global Fund for Community Foundations (GFCF) is an international grantmaking organisation dedicated to building the capacity of community philanthropy organisations (CPOs) in the Global South and other underserved regions. Founded to strengthen local giving ecosystems, GFCF believes that sustainable development must be driven by communities themselves rather than by external donors. GFCF provides small grants in the range of USD 7,000–20,000 to CPOs that work to mobilise local philanthropic resources, support community-led initiatives, and build durable local funding infrastructure. Grants support activities such as establishing or expanding community foundations, running local giving campaigns, building donor relationships, and strengthening governance of community philanthropic institutions. The programme covers organisations in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean. GFCF does not run annual open calls; instead, eligible organisations may submit a concept note at any time, and grantmaking is conditional on the resources GFCF itself has mobilised in a given year. GFCF grants are explicitly designed for philanthropy support and intermediary organisations rather than for operational NGOs directly implementing development or environmental projects. The primary value for external development organisations is as a capacity-building mechanism for local community foundations and giving circles that might then support downstream project work. Historically GFCF has supported community foundations in Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Indonesia, and India, making it a potentially relevant indirect funding channel for organisations that have strong relationships with local community foundation partners in those countries.
Historical Context
