Summary
The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF) is a major corporate funder of plastic waste reduction and recycling value chain programmes worldwide. Over 40 years, it has distributed more than $1.7 billion in grants and awards over 200 grants per year. TCCF's 'Recycling Value Chains' is one of its six core focus areas, alongside water, watershed conservation, disaster response, economic prosperity, and Atlanta community programmes. In Asia, TCCF committed $15 million to UNDP to support plastic waste management across nine countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Maldives, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. The multi-country programme improves plastic waste management, promotes recycling, reduces plastic leakage into the environment, fosters country-based solutions, and facilitates regional collaboration. Under this programme, UNDP country offices run sub-grant competitions open to NGOs, CBOs, academic institutions, and SMEs — with Vietnam offering $30K for winners and $10K for runners-up. In Africa, TCCF granted $10 million to IUCN for the IslandPlas project to mitigate plastic waste in seven African islands, supporting approximately 9,600 individuals in the informal waste sector and targeting collection of 14,000 tonnes and recycling of 5,600 tonnes over three years. TCCF also partnered with OceanHub Africa to launch a $120K pan-African plastic circularity innovation challenge (applications closed February 2026). Direct access to TCCF is by invitation only — the Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals. However, indirect access through UNDP country sub-grant programmes in India and Vietnam, and through OceanHub Africa in future rounds, provides practical pathways for NGOs working on plastic value chains.
Historical Context
TCCF founded 1984. Plastic/recycling focus has intensified since 2018 World Without Waste pledge. UNDP Asia programme announced 2023. OceanHub Africa round Feb 2026 is the first of what may become a recurring call. IUCN IslandPlas project is a 3-year programme.
