Summary
The RISK Award is a biennial prize of up to EUR 100,000, awarded by the Munich Re Foundation in partnership with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). The award has been granted since 2012 and targets operational projects in disaster risk reduction, disaster management, and climate adaptation, primarily in developing and emerging countries. The 2027 RISK Award application phase opens on 1 July 2026 and closes on 13 October 2026. The specific biennial topic for 2027 has not yet been announced as of this assessment. Historical topics have included coastal resilience, eco/nature-based solutions, early warning systems, and children as DRR agents. Past winners have come from Bolivia, South Africa, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Chile, and Mozambique. Thematic scope is defined by the announced biennial topic; all proposals must directly address that topic. Projects must combine action/implementation with other components — research-only proposals are not eligible. Projects must address risks related to climate change-induced or natural hazards. People-centred approaches, multi-stakeholder partnerships, and bottom-up/top-down combinations are valued. Geographic scope is restricted to developing and emerging economies in the Global South as defined by the World Bank income classification. High-income countries are explicitly excluded. Eligible applicants are research institutions, NGOs, and non-profit organisations. Individual applicants are not eligible. The overall project budget (including all sources) must not exceed EUR 1 million. The RISK Award contribution must be visibly impactful within the project, and projects must run 12–24 months. Proposals are evaluated on: Potential for impact, Equity, Scalability, Viability and Sustainability, and Institutional capacity. Applications are submitted in English via an online portal.
Historical Context
