Summary
The Carlsberg Foundation's Semper Ardens Advance programme provides five-year framework grants of DKK 15-25 million to support internationally recognised professors at Danish research institutions pursuing visionary scientific breakthroughs. Research projects venturing into genuinely new scientific territory are explicitly prioritised over incremental work. Thematic scope is not restricted to any particular discipline. The programme is open to all fields of research, ranging from natural and life sciences to humanities and social sciences. There are no thematic priorities related to sustainability, environment, or plastics. Eligible activities include standard research expenditures: consumables, equipment, travel and conferences, research stays, postdoctoral salaries, PhD studentships (with enrolment at Danish graduate schools required), research assistants, project coordinators, and student assistants. Salary for assistant professors cannot be applied for. Geographically, the programme is restricted to Denmark: the main applicant must be employed at a Danish research institution at minimum 80% effort, and the majority of work must be performed in Denmark. International collaborations and visits to partner institutions are permitted but must be secondary. Eligible applicants are tenured internationally recognised professors at Danish research institutions. Applications may be submitted by a single PI or a team of up to four PIs. Non-Danish researchers are excluded unless employed at a Danish institution. Non-profit organisations, NGOs, and private sector entities are not eligible. Target beneficiaries are Danish academic researchers and their institutions. There are no co-funding requirements. The grant is a framework grant, providing flexibility in how funds are used within the approved budget envelope.
