Summary
The Foam Recycling Coalition (FRC) — a special interest group of the Foodservice Packaging Institute — awards annual grants to start or expand foam polystyrene recycling programs in the United States and Canada. The program has been active since 2015 and has funded numerous municipal and private recycling operators. The grant targets post-consumer foam polystyrene including foodservice packaging, egg cartons, meat trays, and protective packaging. Eligible activities include establishing or expanding acceptance of foam at material recovery facilities (MRFs), residential curbside programs, and drop-off or convenience site recycling programs. Grants fund equipment purchases (such as foam densifiers) and are contingent on successful implementation within 6 months. Eligible applicants are public and private entities in the US and Canada: operators of material recovery facilities, managers of residential curbside recycling programs, and managers of drop-off or convenience site programs. For-profit and non-profit entities are eligible. Applicants in communities with existing foam bans are not eligible. Geographically, the program is restricted to the United States and Canada. There is no co-funding requirement, though applicants may incur additional costs for site preparation, conveying systems, electrical infrastructure, and freight. Grant amounts range up to USD 50,000 per recipient and are determined case-by-case. Contracts run for three years and require regular reporting on volumes collected, processed, and marketed. Selection criteria favor applications serving 50,000 or more households, MRF applications of foam densifiers, residential curbside collection, well-defined end markets, detailed project planning, multifaceted outreach plans, comprehensive budgets, and thorough supporting documentation. Applications received before the window opened may also be considered.
Historical Context
Program has been running since 2015. Past recipients include municipalities, counties, and recycling organisations across the US and Canada. Grants range from approximately $9,000 to $50,000.
