Summary

The MARiNAO (Marine Research in the North Atlantic Ocean) programme is funded by the Danish Government and administered by the Research Council Faroe Islands. Its primary objective is to generate new scientific knowledge on the marine environment in the North Atlantic and to strengthen cooperative research ties among the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Denmark. Thematically, the programme focuses on marine processes related to the Greenland-Iceland-Faroe-Scotland Ridge — a region of significant scientific complexity and ecological importance. Priority research themes include physical, chemical, and biological oceanography; ocean acidification; climate change impacts on the marine environment; marine ecosystems dynamics; and biodiversity. The Ridge serves as a unifying geographical theme for the three countries involved. Eligible activities include collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects. Early career researchers (PhD students and postdoctoral researchers) are strongly encouraged to undertake stays in at least two of the three participating countries. Cooperation with partner institutions from other countries in the region is welcomed, though external partners must provide their own funding. Geographically, funded projects must be centred on the North Atlantic Ocean and specifically the Greenland-Iceland-Faroe-Scotland Ridge region. The programme focuses on the marine zones relevant to the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Denmark. Eligible applicants are research institutions and universities from the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Denmark. Projects must be collaborative, involving partners from at least two of these three countries. The primary beneficiaries are researchers and scientists advancing knowledge of North Atlantic marine systems. The typical call budget is up to 14.4 million DKK (~EUR 1.9 million), aiming to fund approximately four projects per call, with a maximum of 3.6 million DKK (~EUR 483,000) per project. The programme plans annual allocations of 8.0 million DKK for 2026, 2027, and 2028, confirming long-term continuity.

Historical Context

Programme has run since at least 2020, with calls in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025. 13 projects have received around 44.4 MDKK from the programme to date. Planned allocations of 8.0M DKK per year for 2026, 2027, and 2028 confirm the programme's continuation.
