Summary
The Research Council of Norway (Forskningsradet) offers grants to Norwegian organisations for communication and dissemination projects that help the general public better understand research on climate, the environment, and the oceans. The programme explicitly supports the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) and aims to improve ocean literacy and climate knowledge among diverse population groups. Thematic scope includes three priority areas: (1) Ocean Science — communicating findings related to the UN Decade of Ocean Science, increasing ocean literacy, particularly reaching those not already interested; (2) Land-based environment — disseminating knowledge on freshwater systems, coastal zones, biodiversity, ecosystems, pollution, land use, circular economy, and natural resources; and (3) Climate — communicating about climate systems, climate change, impacts on nature and society, and societal adaptation and transformation. Eligible activities are communication and dissemination projects only — not research itself. This includes novel public engagement formats, multimedia communication, outreach campaigns, and educational materials that reach clearly defined target groups. Scientific publishing, conferences/seminars, and continuation of already-funded communication activities are explicitly excluded. Projects must start between 1 March 2025 and 1 July 2026 and can run for up to two years, with completion by 31 December 2027. Geographic scope is Norway only — all target groups and measures must be implemented in Norway. International organisations or those based outside Norway are not eligible as project owners. Eligible applicants include approved Norwegian research organisations, companies, public sector bodies, and voluntary sector organisations. Sole proprietorships cannot apply. Project groups must include both research expertise and communication expertise in the relevant topic. Partners are not required but welcome. Budget per project: NOK 100,000–250,000 for the Ocean Science theme (total pool NOK 2M), and up to NOK 400,000 for climate and land-based environment themes (total pool NOK 3M each). Enterprises receive aid under de minimis rules (max EUR 300,000 over three years). No equipment or R&D services procurement costs are allowed.
Historical Context
