Historical Context

Founded in 2011. Played a central role in the adoption of the BBNJ Agreement (High Seas Treaty) in June 2023. The treaty achieved its 60th ratification on September 19, 2025 and entered into force on January 17, 2026. The High Seas Treaty received the Earthshot Prize for "Revive our Oceans" in November 2025. Funded by major foundations including Arcadia Fund, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Minderoo Foundation, Oak Foundation, and David & Lucile Packard Foundation.
