Summary
The UNDP Ocean Innovation Challenge (OIC) is a joint initiative of UNDP, Sweden, and Norway launched in 2020 to identify, finance, and mentor innovative pilot projects that demonstrate new approaches to ocean sustainability under SDG 14. The programme has completed four calls for proposals covering marine pollution reduction, sustainable fisheries, marine protected areas, and blue economy acceleration for SIDS and coastal LDCs. Grants of USD 50,000–250,000 have been awarded to 36 projects across 29 developing countries. Eligible applicants include governments, NGOs/CSOs, private sector companies (including startups), UN entities, and academic institutions. The programme emphasises innovation, replicability, scalability, and sustainability in proposed approaches. The first call focused explicitly on SDG 14.1 (reduce marine pollution), making projects addressing plastic waste collection and recycling directly eligible. Subsequent calls have shifted focus toward fisheries, MPAs, and blue economy for island states. As of March 2026, all four rounds are closed. A fifth round has not been announced. The programme has historically run calls approximately every 12–18 months, suggesting a possible Round 5 in late 2026. Organizations should monitor the oceaninnovationchallenge.org platform and UNDP social media for announcements.
Historical Context
4 rounds completed since 2020. Round 1 (2020) focused on marine pollution/plastic. All rounds now closed. Round 5 not yet announced as of March 2026. Annual/periodic recurrence expected.
Why it was added
Directly funds innovative ocean solutions by NGOs and organizations, highly relevant for marine conservation innovation
