Summary

The Interreg North Sea Programme is an EU-funded transnational cooperation programme covering the North Sea region (Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and UK). It is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the 2021-2027 programme period (VIB). The programme operates through four strategic priorities: (1) Robust and smart economies, (2) Green transitions, (3) Climate resilience, pollution and biodiversity, and (4) Better governance. Historical project portfolio includes work in renewable energy, circular economy, blue economy, ecosystem management, water governance, liveability, green transport, climate adaptation, sustainable farming, energy efficiency, and digital transformation. Eligible activities include transnational research and innovation, pilot projects, knowledge transfer, capacity building, infrastructure, and policy development. Projects must involve partners from multiple North Sea partner countries. Geographically, the programme covers the North Sea partner countries: Belgium (Flemish region), Denmark, Germany (certain states), Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and UK. Transnational partnerships spanning multiple countries are required. Eligible applicants include public authorities, universities and research institutions, NGOs, businesses, and other organisations from the partner countries. The programme includes both standard project types and small-scale projects. The current open call (Call 6) is a capitalisation call opening in December 2026 with budgets up to €1 million and project durations of 1.5 to 2 years. Calls are published periodically throughout the programme period.

Historical Context

The programme is part of the Interreg VIB (2021-2027) period. Previous calls have funded projects in blue economy, circular economy, ecosystem management, climate adaptation, water governance, sustainable farming, and energy. Call 6 (opening December 2026) is a capitalisation call. The programme has supported previous calls (1-5) for substantive projects.
