Summary
The Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation is a long-standing fellowship initiative of The Pew Charitable Trusts that supports midcareer scientists and experts worldwide to conduct marine conservation research. The program has operated for over three decades and has supported more than 200 fellows from 44 countries. Thematic scope is broad across ocean conservation: coral reef restoration, species population dynamics, marine biodiversity, habitat protection, fisheries management, marine plastic pollution, ocean governance, climate resilience, and more. Each fellow designs their own three-year research project on marine conservation issues. Eligible activities include scientific research, field surveys, data analysis, development of conservation tools and protocols, community engagement, and policy-relevant knowledge production. Fellows contribute to a peer network that meets annually to exchange findings, share tools, and engage in mentorship. Geographically the program is global, with no regional restrictions. Fellows have been selected from Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Pacific, and North America. The program particularly values scientists from developing nations and underrepresented regions. Eligible applicants are midcareer scientists and conservation experts. Selection is by nomination through an international expert committee — there is no open public application process. The program does not fund organizations or NGOs but individual researchers. Funding is USD 150,000 per fellow over three years. Specialty tracks include the Pew-Gerstner Fellows in Ocean Plastics Research (focused on plastic pollution) and the Pew-Hoover Fellows in Marine and Biomedical Science. Fellows become part of a lasting global alumni community.
