Summary

The Lloyd's Register Foundation Maritime Connected funding call supports projects that improve the safety and connectivity of the global maritime system by bringing together diverse stakeholders, especially from underrepresented groups and emerging economies. The Foundation is a UK-registered charity that owns Lloyd's Register Group Limited and focuses on safer maritime systems, infrastructure, and engineering skills globally. The thematic scope of the programme centres on maritime safety, systems thinking, and community inclusion. Priority is given to projects addressing ocean safety gaps, improving multi-stakeholder visibility, fostering collaboration, and ensuring local perspectives from developing countries inform global challenges. The Foundation has ocean centres in India, Indonesia, Philippines, Bangladesh, Brazil, Ghana, and Kenya, and applications from these countries are particularly encouraged. Eligible activities include multi-stakeholder workshops, collaborative inquiries, ethnographic or qualitative research, joint advocacy and awareness campaigns, travel grants for underrepresented voices to attend international policy discussions, and supply-chain or design-chain connection projects. Infrastructure construction, school fees, retrospective funding, and lobbying are explicitly excluded. The geographic scope is global, with no regions excluded. However, the Foundation prioritises engagement from emerging economies and developing maritime states, particularly where safety challenges are most acute. Most funding is expected to go to organisations outside the UK. Eligible applicants include organisations and individuals from any country. While individuals can apply, applications from organisations that include individuals (e.g., conference organisers working with individuals) are preferred. Partnerships are strongly encouraged with no limit on partner numbers, though only the lead organisation is contracted. Groups must not exclude underrepresented voices. Target beneficiaries include seafarers, coastal communities, women, maritime educators, and communities in emerging economies who are typically excluded from maritime safety decision-making. The end goal is a safer, more connected maritime system for all. Funding ranges from £2,000 for small convenings and skills-building activities to £60,000 for larger multi-stakeholder projects. Projects are typically up to 12 months; multi-year projects are considered case-by-case. Successful applicants also receive dissemination and publicity support from the Foundation.

Historical Context

This is the first pilot round of the Maritime Connected call, open from 19 August 2025 to 6 February 2026. The Foundation states that depending on pilot results, successive and potentially amended calls may follow. A webinar for applicants was held on 3 September 2025.
