Summary

The Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation is a competitive individual fellowship programme administered by The Pew Charitable Trusts. Each fellow receives a $150,000 grant allocated over three years to conduct research that generates new data, knowledge, or methods to advance ocean protection and sustainable use. The programme's thematic scope is broad ocean conservation, including marine protected areas, coral reef protection, fisheries science, marine species conservation, climate-ocean interactions, and other pressing environmental challenges. Fellows are expected to produce research with direct conservation decision-making relevance. Eligible activities include conducting a proposed three-year research project, participating in annual meetings and networking events with other fellows and alumni, receiving training in connecting research to conservation outcomes, and developing professional conservation networks. Geographically, the programme is global. Since its inception, it has supported 221 professionals in 45 countries with no stated geographic preference or restriction. Eligible applicants are mid-career professionals — primarily natural and social scientists — with advanced degrees, strong research records, and a commitment to evidence-based conservation. Engineering and other technical professionals with relevant credentials are also considered. Full-time doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers are excluded. Critically, the programme is nomination-based: candidates must first be nominated by one of Pew's selected marine science experts before they can be invited to apply. The award amount is $150,000 per fellow over 3 years. Fellows also receive Pew staff support for grant management, communications, and outreach, plus workshop and training opportunities.

Historical Context

Programme has supported 221 professionals in 45 countries as of early 2026. In March 2026, Pew awarded fellowships to seven scientists advancing marine conservation. Programme updated March 2026.
