Summary

BlueActionBANOS is a four-year EU-funded initiative (2025-2029) that provides substantial funding and technical support for ocean and water restoration in the Baltic and North Sea region. The program offers two distinct funding mechanisms: Community-Led Actions (CLAs) providing €200,000 to €2 million for consortia implementing concrete restoration and sustainable blue economy projects, and Transition Agendas (TAs) offering up to €100,000 for developing strategic multi-year roadmaps for systemic sustainability transitions. The program targets a broad range of stakeholders including NGOs, local authorities, SMEs, research organizations, and educational institutions registered in BANOS (Baltic and North Sea basin) countries. CLAs are designed for organizations with mature, proven concepts ready for scaling, requiring consortia of 2-12 entities. TAs suit communities or organizations needing to build strategic foundations before large-scale implementation, allowing individual entities or small consortia of up to 3 partners. Applications follow a two-step process: a mandatory Project Idea Form (deadline March 16, 2026) followed by individual expert consultations and a Full Proposal submission (deadline May 29, 2026). All funded projects receive technical assistance from an 18-partner consortium, access to knowledge-sharing resources, and peer-exchange opportunities. The program is managed through the FundingBox platform and aligns with the EU's Mission Ocean goals for ecosystem restoration, decarbonization, and climate adaptation.

Historical Context

BlueActionBANOS is a four-year EU initiative (September 2025 – August 2029) under EU Grant Agreement 101217604. The project kicked off in September 2025. These are the first open calls launched on November 28, 2025. The program plans 3 total calls over its lifetime (1 Community-Led Actions call, 2 Transition Agendas calls). A separate Call for Independent Experts was launched in February 2026.
