Summary

The DOEN Foundation Sustainable Energy programme provides grants, loans, guarantees, and equity investments to pioneering initiatives accelerating the transition to renewable energy. The programme is part of DOEN's broader mission to support transformative solutions to climate change, responding to the urgent need for innovation in sustainable energy systems. Thematic priorities include facilitating access to renewable energy, enabling consumers and rural entrepreneurs to generate their own clean energy, and reducing or replacing fossil fuel consumption. The programme targets proven-concept initiatives approaching commercial viability, as well as organisations that bring together or strengthen the sustainable energy sector ecosystem. Geographically, the programme covers the Netherlands (consumer renewable energy access and energy savings) and East Africa and India (rural renewable energy access). DOEN currently states a preference for applications from emerging economies, particularly East Africa and India. Eligible applicants must be legal entities with an entrepreneurial approach and a transparent, realistic plan. Applications from individuals are not accepted. Organisations with disproportionately large reserves are excluded. Purely commercial initiatives, standalone research, awareness campaigns, and government bodies are ineligible. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis via the My DOEN online portal and must be submitted at least four months before the project start date. The review process takes approximately four months. DOEN's funding philosophy is catalytic — providing capital during the risky early or near-market phase to enable scale and sector impact.

Historical Context

DOEN Foundation has been active since 1991. The Sustainable Energy theme is part of the broader organisation. The foundation has published a portfolio analysis of its sustainable energy investments. Currently prioritises emerging economy applications.
