Summary
Interreg Atlantic Area is a transnational EU territorial cooperation programme for the Atlantic coast of Europe, co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The 2021-2027 programme covers France, Ireland, Portugal, and Spain, with transnational partnerships required from at least three participating countries. The programme is structured around four priorities: Blue innovation and competitiveness (sustainable marine and maritime innovation, blue economy), Blue/Green environment (marine and coastal protection, biodiversity, climate adaptation, ocean observation), Blue sustainable and social tourism and culture, and Better governance for cooperation. The Blue/Green environment priority is particularly relevant for marine conservation and coastal resilience projects. Eligible activities include applied research, pilot projects, innovation deployment, capacity building, governance improvements, and transnational network building. Eligible applicants include public bodies, NGOs, universities, research institutions, and private entities. ERDF co-funding applies. Three calls have been completed in the 2021-2027 period, with the third call closing in February 2025 and 24 projects approved. Future calls are planned according to an indicative timeline (subject to Monitoring Committee approval). Applications are submitted via the SIGI 21-27 platform. The programme's geographic focus is entirely on the Atlantic coast — France, Ireland, Portugal, Spain — and does not cover the North Sea or Baltic Sea regions that are the primary focus of the marine-conservation theme's target audience.
