Funding Goal
Funds full-scale demonstration projects for new environmental technology solutions that serve as showcases for Danish environmental technology. Lighthouse projects must lead to environmental protection going beyond existing Danish and EU standards and involve all relevant parts of the value chain to support widespread adoption. Investment in new environmental technology infrastructure is specifically eligible under this instrument. Projects create Danish jobs and drive export of environmental technology.
Funding Amount
Total pool: approximately DKK 61 million for 2026. Individual grants not specified. Co-financing rates depend on company size; investment in new environmental technology is explicitly grantable under this instrument. Lighthouse projects are typically larger-scale than development projects.
Deadline
2026-08-25 (Fixed)

Summary

MUDP Lighthouse Projects 2026 (Fyrtårnsprojekter) is the flagship instrument of the Danish Environmental Technology Development and Demonstration Programme, administered by Miljøstyrelsen. It funds full-scale demonstrations of new environmental technology solutions that go beyond existing Danish and EU environmental standards and serve as export reference cases for Danish environmental technology. Thematically, lighthouse projects follow MUDP's 2024-2027 strategy and 2026 action plan priorities, covering the full range of environmental technology domains: water, wastewater, waste and circular economy, air quality, soil remediation, climate adaptation, and environmental monitoring. Projects must demonstrate environmental novelty — either new technologies, innovative combinations of known technologies, or solutions achieving significantly higher environmental performance or lower cost than current best practice. Lighthouse projects are distinguished from regular development projects by their full-scale demonstration character and the ability to include investment in new environmental technology infrastructure. Projects typically involve a consortium of organisations representing all relevant parts of the value chain — technology developer, technology host/operator, and potential adopters. Value chain involvement is a key evaluation criterion that strengthens applications. Geographic scope is primarily Denmark. International projects are allowed provided they meet the same standards requirements (must exceed applicable EU and Danish regulatory environmental requirements). The programme has a note specifically about international applications. Eligible organisations are private companies (SMEs and large enterprises), public utility enterprises (water/wastewater companies, waste management companies), and research institutions. Public authorities (municipalities, government agencies) cannot apply as lead applicants or co-applicants for funding. The MUDP law §8 lists eligible applicant categories; NGOs and membership organisations are not explicitly included. The total 2026 Lighthouse Projects pool is approximately DKK 61 million. Applications must be submitted via MitID-authenticated online portal. Deadline: 25 August 2026 at 12:00. Expected response: mid-December 2026. Third-party evaluation of environmental results is mandatory for lighthouse projects receiving grants from 2021 onwards.

Historical Context

MUDP Lighthouse Projects (Fyrtårnsprojekter) is one of four MUDP instruments. It is specifically designed for large-scale, full-scale technology demonstrations that serve as showcase references for Danish environmental technology export. Unlike development projects, lighthouse projects can include investment in new environmental technology infrastructure. The 2024-2027 strategy prioritises projects that involve full value chains. MUDP Board recommends careful consideration of how parties organise around a lighthouse project (who leads vs. subcontracts).
