Summary

The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Training Programme is a fully-funded one-year postgraduate course in ocean bathymetry and ocean mapping at the University of New Hampshire's Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM/JHC), USA. Funded by the Nippon Foundation of Japan since 2004, the programme awards a Graduate Certificate in Ocean Mapping to six selected students per cohort. The programme's thematic scope covers integrated seabed mapping systems, applied tools for ocean mapping, geodesy and positioning, bathymetric spatial analysis, marine geology and geophysics, applied physical oceanography, and hydrographic fieldwork. It is closely linked to the Seabed 2030 initiative, which aims to complete mapping of the global ocean floor by 2030. Eligible activities include academic coursework, laboratory work, sea-going fieldwork on research cruises, working visits to other research institutions, and seminars from visiting ocean mapping specialists. Students are expected to return to their home organisations after completing the programme to apply their skills. Geographically, the programme is hosted in the USA but is global in its recruitment, specifically seeking candidates from a wide geographic distribution of coastal countries to broaden the GEBCO international community. Eligible applicants are individuals with a minimum four-year undergraduate degree in a related science or engineering discipline, strong English proficiency, and the ability to undertake graduate-level coursework. Full-time doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers are not eligible unless they also hold a professional position. Six students are selected per year through a competitive, invitation-and-application process. The programme is fully funded: tuition and fees are paid directly, students receive a stipend of approximately US$39,400 per year, plus computer hardware, textbooks, and travel expenses. Students must cover their own housing and subsistence costs from the stipend.

Historical Context

Programme has been running since 2004, hosted at UNH. The 23rd cohort will begin in late August 2026 (pending Nippon Foundation funding confirmation by April 2026). The programme is part of the Seabed 2030 project launched in 2017 between GEBCO and the Nippon Foundation to map the global ocean floor by 2030.
