Summary
BlueActionBANOS is an EU-funded project (Horizon Europe, EU Missions for Healthy Oceans) that provides grant funding to Baltic and North Sea communities for ocean restoration and sustainable blue economy transitions. The project is coordinated by the Submariner Network and FoodBioCluster.dk, and offers two types of funding: Community-Led Actions and Transition Agendas. The Community-Led Actions open call funds action-oriented projects addressing pollution, marine/coastal ecosystem restoration, and sustainable blue economy solutions. Priority thematic areas include tackling pollution, restoring marine ecosystems, advancing circular blue economy, ocean observation, data sharing, and blue tech and digital innovation. Projects must involve coastal/marine communities such as ports, fishing and aquaculture communities, islands, river basins, or blue economy enterprises. The Transition Agendas open call supports individual entities or small consortia in designing regional action plans guiding local sustainability, marine or freshwater ecosystem restoration, decarbonisation, and climate adaptation pathways. These are strategic planning grants to help communities chart their transition pathways. Eligible activities include ecosystem restoration, pollution reduction, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture practices, blue bioeconomy, citizen science, maritime cultural heritage, and ocean literacy. Technical assistance, expert consultation, networking, and knowledge-sharing services are provided alongside grants. Geographic scope is strictly the Baltic and North Sea basin (BANOS) countries. Applicants must be registered legal entities in BANOS countries. Eligible types include public authorities, research institutes, NGOs, enterprises, cooperatives, fishing/aquaculture communities, ports, and river basin communities. Funding ranges from EUR 200,000 to EUR 2 million per Community-Led Action (up to 24 months), and up to EUR 100,000 per Transition Agenda (up to 18 months). Applications require a prior Project Idea Form submission; only those who complete the consultation step are invited to submit full proposals.
Historical Context
BlueActionBANOS is funded by the European Union (grant agreement 101217604) and is a successor to the BONUS programme for Baltic Sea research. A total of 3 calls are planned throughout the 4-year project period: 1 Community-Led Actions call and 2 Transition Agendas calls. Project duration is up to 24 months (Community-Led Actions) or up to 18 months (Transition Agendas).
Why it was added
BONUS successor programme directly funding Baltic/North Sea marine restoration and blue economy
