Summary
The Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme 2021-2027 is an EU transnational cooperation programme covering the entire Baltic Sea region. Funded through the European Regional Development Fund, it brings together organizations from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden to address shared regional challenges through four thematic priorities. Priority 3 (Climate-neutral societies) is particularly relevant for environmental organizations, with Specific Objective 3.1 on circular economy covering waste management innovation, resource efficiency, and sustainable production. Priority 2 (Water-smart societies) covers both sustainable water management (SO 2.1) and blue economy development (SO 2.2), which relates to sustainable use of marine resources and coastal areas. Public bodies, NGOs, private companies, research institutions, and universities are all eligible to participate. Projects are transnational in scope and require multiple partners from different Baltic Sea countries. The programme manages a significant budget and has funded hundreds of projects since its inception 25 years ago. For organizations working on plastic pollution and circular economy in the Baltic region, Priority 3 offers direct relevance, while Priority 2 relates to marine pollution and sustainable ocean use across the entire Baltic Sea basin.
