Summary

Interreg Baltic Sea Region 2021-2027 is a transnational EU cooperation programme co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) supporting collaborative projects across the Baltic Sea region. Denmark is a core programme country, making this directly accessible to Danish organisations including those working on marine plastic and circular economy. The programme has four thematic priorities: Priority 1 (Innovative Societies) covering innovation systems, climate resilience, and community safety; Priority 2 (Water-Smart Societies) covering sustainable waters management and blue economy development; Priority 3 (Climate-Neutral Societies) covering climate neutral cities and communities, circular economy and bioeconomy, and smart green mobility; and Priority 4 (Cooperation Governance). Priority 2's blue economy and sustainable waters components, and Priority 3's circular economy and bioeconomy components are most relevant to marine plastic and ocean plastic value chain initiatives. Activities under these priorities can include research and innovation, pilot implementation, capacity building, policy development, and transnational knowledge sharing. The geographic scope covers all Baltic Sea EU member states (Germany, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden) plus Norway. Projects must have partners from at least 3 participating countries. This transnational requirement is a key eligibility hurdle. Eligible applicants include public authorities, public equivalent bodies, NGOs, and private organisations. For NGOs and membership organisations, partnership with at least two organisations from other programme countries is required. EU partners receive up to 80% ERDF co-financing; Norwegian partners up to 50% through Norwegian state funds. Calls are announced periodically through the Joint Secretariat. The Bamos+ system manages applications. Project budgets typically range EUR 1-5 million with EU co-financing covering up to 80% for EU partners. A matchmaking platform helps organisations find suitable transnational partners.
